The 1st stage of food diversification for babies from 6 months to 8 months

Baby is growing up and is interested in the food that is offered to him. But his digestive system is not yet fully mature: he needs time to get used to new foods. It is therefore important to introduce only one food at a time to familiarize him with its texture and taste.

Milk

At this age, milk remains the staple food: your child should continue to drink at least 500 ml of milk per day. It’s up to you whether you continue to breastfeed or switch to second-stage infant formula bottles.

In addition to feeding your baby, milk helps to keep him hydrated for the first few months. You don’t have to give your baby extra water unless it’s very hot. Don’t wait until your baby is thirsty. Fruit juices are not recommended for infants: breast milk or infant formula provides enough vitamins and minerals so you don’t need to supplement with juice.

Being well adapted to the needs of the child, these milks are recommended, but otherwise, whole milks are preferable to reduced fat milks.

Vegetables

You can start introducing vegetables as early as the 6th month: in the milk bottle or as a supplement to the feed.

How to choose them well?

Choose varieties that are well tolerated by your baby’s stomach: green beans, spinach, seedless and skinless zucchini, white leeks, carrots, etc. Avoid vegetables rich in fiber such as salsify, artichoke or green leeks.

How to prepare them?

Vegetables should always be cooked. If you bottle-feed your child, start by replacing the water in the bottle with the vegetable cooking water, without adding salt (i.e. 210 g of stock + 7 scoops of milk). Then you can gradually add mixed vegetables to obtain a thick soup containing only 5 scoops of milk. If you are breastfeeding, cook your vegetables with water or steam, again without adding salt, mix them to get a thick soup texture and spoon it out. You can add potato to the mixture to give it a more “solid” texture and a little fat, etc.

Which meal should I give them to?

At noon, in addition to milk, with a bottle or a teaspoon. If you give them with a bottle, remember to use a 2nd age teat with an enlarged slit. From 6 months, you can give him a bottle of soup with 5 measures of milk at the evening meal.

Fruits

Offer them 15 days after introducing the vegetables. At this age, fruit should always be cooked.

How to choose them well?

Some are preferable: pear, apple, peach, banana or apricots.

How to prepare them?

For fruit, prepare them in compotes, using ripe fruit, cooked and then mixed, without added sugar. You can use apples as a base: children often appreciate their soft texture and natural sweetness. You can also offer your child small jars of fruit. As you go along, you can introduce less homogenous and less smooth textures by offering your child crushed fruit for example, always without added sugar. Try to introduce only one fruit a day to give your child time to get used to the taste.

At what meal should they be given?

At lunchtime or as a complement to the bottle or afternoon feed.

Meat, fish, eggs

You can start introducing meat and fish as early as the 6th month; for eggs, wait until the 7th month. These foods provide protein, which is important for the proper development of the body. But beware, the needs of a child are not the same as those of an adult.

How to choose them well?

Vary the type of meat, avoiding giblets and cold cuts (except for rinded cooked ham). For fish, change between varieties and sizes (fresh or frozen) but avoid breaded fish. As for eggs, they should be eaten hard.

What quantities?

From 6 to 7 months, add a little meat or fish mixed in a “homemade” vegetable purée (about 1 teaspoon). From 7 to 8 months, you can offer, every day: 10 g (or 2 teaspoons) of mixed meat or fish, and 1/4 of hard-boiled egg.

If you don’t have time to cook, you can also give him a small jar of 200 g vegetables/meat or vegetables/fish.

Starchy foods

Potatoes, in small quantities, give your dishes a thicker texture. Baby flours can be a good solution if your child is a “small eater”.

How to prepare them?

Steam cook the potatoes, then grind them and mix them with a vegetable (carrots, pumpkin, spinach, seeded zucchinis, green beans…). As for infant flours, you can add them to the bottle (2 teaspoons of gluten-free infant flour) or use them in a vegetable soup.

At which meal to give them?

Add potatoes or a little baby flour to the midday purée. You can also put a little baby flour in the evening bottle.

Added fats

They can be added to vegetables, purees and soups.

How to choose them well?

Opt for butter or vegetable fats: rapeseed oil, olive oil, sunflower oil, etc. and avoid frying.

In what quantities?

A knob of butter or a teaspoon of oil can be added.
